Designer gets a gold

A garden designed in Newent to promote Yorkshire has won a Gold Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show.

The gold is the 10th won by show garden expert, Julian Dowle, of Newent.

He said: "To win a tenth gold medal at Chelsea is fantastic and I am delighted. The garden recreates the sights, sounds and smells of one of the jewels in Yorkshire's crown - the Yorkshire Dales."

To garden, sponsored by tourism body Yorkshire Forward, has been planned since July and is made up of 29 trees, 200 woodland ferns, 14 climbers, 700 cottage plants and 26 yards of flagstones.

Five lorry loads of stone went into the creation of the path, beck and barn. Features of the Alive with Opportunity garden include real dry stone walls and a pack horse bridge.

Last year, Mr Dowle won the people's vote for the best garden at the show, which finishes today (Friday) and he hopes to make it two in a row.
