Yet again the area of Newent has become famous for one of its food and drink products. Local Cheese, Stinking Bishop, has become world famous by appearing in the Wallace & Gromit film, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Its unique smell is produced when the cheese is washed in Perry, a local cider produced from the Perry Pear, which gives it a pungent rind but leaves the inside mild, milky.
Cheese maker Mr Martell is shocked by all the talk of fame and fortune. He commented, I can only wear one suit at a time and I certainly don't want fame." The company employs two cheesemakers who produce about 100 rounds a day, at Dymock, 2 miles north of Newent. To order cheese visit the local delicatessens in the Newent area or order online at www.real-eating.co.uk
